Hopefully today will be less fraught and crazy-making than yesterday was, and I will be able to get some work done on my yuletide story. I am worried I won't live up to the source, but then I think, in some ways, who could? Which will make more sense once I can talk about it.

*

LJ, please to be fixing comment notifications ASAP. It is really freaking irritating that I'm still not getting any.

Lastly, thank you again for all the lovely snowflakes. I wasn't able to get to everyone before they shut it down, but if I could have, I would have. *heart*

Still Lurking About [Dec. 8th, 2009|12:14 am]
thetreacletart
I had the most lovely surprise in my in-box today. Several thoughtful and generous friends sent me some virtual gifts. I can't tell you how touched I was by that. And how very surprised.

Know that I think of you all often. Nearly daily, truth be told. I still write stories in my head; I just can't seem to get them down on paper – how sad is that. One day, soon, I'll give you all a more detailed update, one that better chronicles my ups and down of the last year. It’s been…interesting.

Happy holidays to all.

With love,

[Current Mood |relieved and exhausted]

Many of you know that my son has problems. He's got ADHD and depression (to the point of being suicidal), he's got low self-esteem, and has had all sorts of problems socially and academically in school. He's in counseling and he sees a psychiatrist regularly, too. We've made a lot of progress over the last several months, but something happened today that makes me wonder if all this progress isn't in our imaginations.

When is it time to panic? )

One of these days, I will actually have fannish content and squee on this journal, again, instead of just horrible family issues. I apologize for not answering comments to my last post, and I probably won't get a chance to answer these ones, either, for awhile, at least. I'm just so drained and I think I'm getting depressed. I have two weeks off work coming up, though, the weeks of Christmas and New Year's. I'm going to spend it playing with my kid and getting my happy back.

Thanks for listening. *hugs*

Recs [Dec. 7th, 2009|06:15 pm]

[Current Mood |impressed]

Moar recs. For those keeping track, these two completely blew my mind and are both going on my list of stories to put in the vault to be stored for all time. Yes, really. They are that good.

His Father's Son by [info]rickey_a (Albus Severus/Scorpius, Draco, NC-17, 7K)
Scorpius Malfoy tries to find his own way in the world.

Okay, so, first of all, you can't tell a single thing from that header, really, which is not the author's fault. I sympathise, to which any of you who might have read my Albus genfic last month could attest. "Al wakes up and has a nice day," or whatever the summary was, doesn't tell you a goddamned thing. But in that case, I hope it was evident by the end why the summary couldn't really be any more specific. Same applies here. It's nearly impossible to review this story without giving away the farm. At heart, it's a lovely teenage romance story between Al and Scorpius. Underneath a few layers, it's also a slightly unsettling Malfoy family drama. Underneath a few more, it's an incredibly clever play on all the elements that make the Potterverse so compelling in the first place: the magic, and all that entails. This story eventually takes one crucial scene from canon and flips it completely on its head. You will never read that scene the same way again. You might not ever read these characters in any other fic the same way again. I don't think I will. This universe is now the only one I can see for them. It's astonishing how Rickey did it, really. Absolutely stunning, in terms of narrative construction, in terms of characterisation, and in terms of a plot that could not be more brilliant. I'm being vague, I know, but trust me. It's an unbelievably well-crafted story. Damn, I can't even use one of the tags I want, without spoiling it! :)

(edit: Ah, I see I should clarify: this was originally written for [info]hp_darkfest, so it has some dark themes, but I didn't mention that originally because tbh, assumptions about what might be in it are what kept me from reading it for the past 6 weeks since it went up. It's maybe a shade darker than anything that happens in canon, but not much, IMO. There are spoiler warnings on the fic, if you need them, but I beg you to try it without reading them. It's not about sexual abuse or gore or anything. But, of course, YMMV, and I don't want to lead you into blindly reading something outside your comfort zone. :)

Give Chase by Anon at [info]hd_holidays (Harry/Draco, NC-17: EWE, some D/s, bondage, 6K)
All Draco knows is that he can’t stop running.

I just. I can't even. *flail* The sheer originality of this fic is amazing in itself. I've never seen anything like it. It plays on every Potter/Malfoy rivalry you can think of, especially Auror/suspect, and crafts an ongoing game of CHASE as the basis for a slowly evolving D/s relationship. Like, running through the streets kind of chase. Maggie mentioned her running kink in reviewing this fic, and yeah. Seriously. The action sequences are incredibly well written, and that cannot be easy. By the time you finish it, you'll be panting yourself, charged with adrenaline and ready to take off down that alley once more to try to get away. It's exhilarating. Both men are wonderfully characterised, but the way we see Harry from Draco's POV especially got under my skin and tugged hard. “Malfoy.” The hairs on the back of Draco’s neck stood on end. “Why the fuck do you run when you know I’ll catch you?” al;ksjdfl;askdfjl;askdf. Fresh and original and hot like burning and tense and adrenaline-fuelled, and just, wow. Amazing story.

Read? Liked? Think I'm on crack but read and liked something else instead? Either way, go on and leave a bit of feedback for a hard-working author or artist today!

Animated film rec: 9, sort of vs. Dragon Hunters [Dec. 8th, 2009|12:10 am]

painless_j
9 9 []
Rated PG-13 for violence and scary images.
Runtime: 79 minutes.
Director: Shane Acker
Summary: When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

My notes: BFF ordered me to watch this film 'cos she had seen a couple of scenes from it and fell in love with the visuals. So I did.

I liked it fine, especially the visual side, yes. Landscapes, the dolls, those factories and machines. If you like steampunk, go for it! I did find it very, very pleasant for the eyes. Not quite an eye candy 'cos it's all greyish-brownish and raw and dusty but it looks really nice.

I even liked the story for the most part. It's quite charming, and the story of a small individual becoming a hero in order to save the world, figuring things out, gathering courage and strength, well, it's cliché of course but it's a sure win as far as modern action/adventure goes. But at the same time, I found it annoying. I mean, if you have such a well-established heroic cliché, there's no need to make it even more cliché it by making the villain a Hitler in such a non-metaphorical way. I mean, sometimes it's OK to believe that your spectators aren't completely stupid, so there's no need to put things in their mouth and chew for them. Sometimes you can create a more far-fetched metaphor, say, as Tolkien did in LotR or as Hiromu Arakawa does in Fullmetal Alchemist, and your audience will get it. Or on the contrary: make him Hitler, no a Hitler-like something. Don't dance around trying to side-step every dangerous thing.

Another thing that annoyed me was 7 at the very end of it. The dolls are more or less sexless, more boy/men-like than girl/woman-like but whatever. I liked it that the story wasn't about love, that it wasn't about how family saves everything -- which, let's be frank, Hollywood feeds us so much as to make one want to stay single forever. But then [spoiler]7 acquired some distinctly lady-like expressions, nearly batting eyelashes. WTF? Will they now hold hand and knit baby dolls or something?[/end spoiler]

And this leads me to the following. I liked Dragon Hunters much better (my review). They are seemingly nothing alike, Dragon Hunters and 9. It's just that they both are about small people saving the world and that something in the animation looks similar to me. So, while I'm ready to rave about Dragon Hunters for ages, this review is about 9 and regretfully, I'm not prepared to squeal about it. Yes, I enjoyed it. Yes, it's a real pleasure for the eyes. But I expected more. The animation made me expect more originality from the plot, and it might be completely my fault that I was so ready to fall in love but in the end, merely liked it. But like it I did. Give it a try!

I think it's very nice that Livejournal is offering a free virtual gift, and I've even sent a couple of snowflakes myself. I'm also amused that snowflake mania appears to have taken over my flist, but I'm still not tempted to enable virtual gifts for my journal. Sorry about that!

Meanwhile, I've been pushing exceptionally hard to finish grading the last set of papers for my comp classes so I can have a tiny respite before final exam material starts coming in later this week, and if I see one more comma error, I may well scream.

I've fallen behind completely on answering comments, so I am declaring today comment amnesty day, and getting rid of all the unanswered comments (on anything but fic - those I will try to answer) from before today.

I have three sets of minutes to write now, plus yuletide and broken toys. Yay?

Have a poem:

Rhymes and Songs

It's late now, December, a few trees
continue translating.
A menorah
holds up its little buckets of light.
An old woman with hands to her ears,
two homeless men discussing the nature of evil.
It's a clear morning.
Everyone's carrying luggage. There're gaps
between passersby, larger than usual.
The sun sets silver shields
in a row of window frames, all but one,
where a girl in a fur hat looks out.
Dawn riddled with memories
fading and dispersing among the trees,
fever subsiding —
you think, at last I can do what I want,
but mostly
you're building on the silence,
the solemnity of things left to themselves.
White limousine at the corner: an
intricate, depressed millionaire
trolling for a girl so beautiful
& frightened she might be enticed.
And a new life, arduous
and dire, commences. Years
on a backcountry farm near one of the Great Lakes,
a bent for poetry, little rhymes
& songs
to soothe yourself
and children you've come to know.

Summary: Left angry and bitter after the war, Harry’s whole focus is now on exacting due punishment on the guilty. Unfortunately, only one man is within his reach, and Harry is intent on making Severus Snape pay.
Author’s Notes: Some dialogue taken directly from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It’s safe to say I wouldn’t have even attempted to write this story, much less finished it, without the wonderful hand-holding of my beta. Thank you so much. Issues with notifiactions [Dec. 6th, 2009|09:23 pm]

announcements

[squeaky]
There have been a lot of issues with notifications with several email providers for the past 2 weeks. Seems that a spammer has been using insanejournal.com as a landing page for their spam. This is causing some email providers to either delay or completely block mail from insanejournal.com.

There isn't anything we can do about this besides continue to be vigilant in suspending these accounts. If you own an account that gets suspended with no notification it is because your account was mistakenly identified as a spam account. Due to the shear volume of accounts being suspended we cannot review each individual account so some mistakes may be made.

Please understand we have been and will continue to do anything we can to stop this spam and therefore restore the ability to send email to a number of providers.

LJ, let my comments go!

*shakes tiny ineffectual fist*

*

\o/

Giants beat the Cowboys! That always makes for a great Sunday. And they swept them this year, so I think that means they have the upper hand should it come down to a tiebreaker.

*

After brunch, I went to Supercuts and while she was cutting my hair, the hairdresser quizzed me on 19th c. novels like Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice (well, technically movies adapted from 19th c. novels). I thought she said she'd read Jane Eyre, so I kind of spoiled it for her (crazy wife in the attic omg!) but she didn't seem to care. She said she was going to bump it up on her Netflix list, 'cause she likes the creepy ones.

Generally, I hate having to chat while having my hair done, but this conversation was amusing and also about something I am familiar with, which is not usually the case. Also, she washed my hair with this lavender and mint shampoo that I really liked so I ended up buying it. Obviously, the way to upsell me is with conversation about books and things that smell nice.

*

I have a whopping 71 words on my yuletide story. Wah! Also, I am trying to figure out how I am going to find a beta who knows the source, because I'd like someone who is at least familiar with it to read the thing over when I finally finish it.

When that's done, I can focus on Broken Toys, among other things. I think I know what I'm writing for that, but writing it in my current unable to write state should be interesting.

Stupid writing. Why so hard?
